We are a group of diverse Believers who worship The LORD with one accord – being Reformed, Evangelical Christians who believe in the inerrancy of The Word of God as written by Him (through His direct inspiration) in The Holy Bible. Many Members of the Congregation are Reformed Baptists and at Castle Street, we rely wholly on the movement of The Holy Spirit through The Word of God and use His Word as our Sole Authority.
How Are We Governed?
Castle Street Church was founded in 1850 by a group of Christians called ‘Congregationalists’ who were ex-Members of The Presbyterian Church in Wales. They chose to leave The Presbyterian Church because they believed that it had walked away from following The Word of God in the way they structured and governed the church and congregation. The Founders of ‘Castle Street Congregational Church’ wanted to build a Church to home the large group of believers (congregation) who wanted to be self-governing according to The Word, following the structure as laid out in 1st and 2nd Timothy faithfully and teachings throughout The New Testament.
Castle Street Church is therefore not governed by any outside authority or body and is entirely ruled by the Members in total accordance with The Word of The LORD. Congregationalism isn’t a term we hear often nowadays but it remains an essential part of every Evangelical Church, that the people ARE The Church- The Body and Bride of Christ and that we are ruled by His Word and His Holy Spirit alone. This does not conflict with us allying ourselves to other faithful Evangelical Churches or with Organisations that are engaged with spreading The Gospel of Truth.
A Summary Of Our Beliefs:
- We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God.
- We believe there is only one God who has three distinct persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
- We believe that man was created in the image of God and was created perfect, but that we fell into sin by disobedience (which we have inherited from Adam & Eve). All nature, including humanity fell after the events in the Garden of Eden.
- We believe that God graciously sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ to be the Saviour of the world and to Redeem all Creation.
- We believe that His death on the Cross is the only way that God forgives sin and is the only way that repentant sinners can be reconciled to a Holy God.
- We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ rose bodily from the grave and has ascended to Heaven, from where He will Return again a second time.
- We believe the Holy Spirit brings to us all the blessings that Christ has secured for us once we express our Faith/Trust in Jesus Christ.
- We believe in Heaven and Hell. Heaven is open to all who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and that Hell is the ultimate place of punishment and eternal separation from God for all who reject Him.
We are a Church devoted to studying The Word of God (exegesis) and we enjoy expanding our knowledge of The LORD, to The Glory of God, on both Wednesday at our Bible Study & Prayer meeting and on Sunday during our Sabbath Service.
